EU failing to protect consumers from food scandals – open letter to Jean-Claude Juncker 

Over the past decades, Europe’s recurring food scandals have shaken consumer confidence and exposed the public to avoidable health risks – with recent examples being the cases of contaminated Lactalis baby milk and fipronil-tainted eggs. Millions of harmful, illegal and deceptive products continue to find their way onto supermarket shelves. Neither the competent authorities nor the manufacturers and retailers are able to accurately track the movement of goods and immediately remove offending products from the market. Europe’s consumers are not being promptly provided with the information they need to protect themselves. However, in spite of these grievances, the European Commission sees no reason for a fundamental reform of European food law. This is why the international consumer organisation foodwatch is planning to stage a visually powerful protest in front of the European Commission building. During this protest, foodwatch activists will be symbolically handing over an open letter to Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, along with a report analysing the weaknesses in EU food law with concrete proposals for improvement.
